Yikes
Could it get worse than this for a candidate? It is basically like this Sam Brownback moment except with less xenophobia.

I recall John Kerry sitting alone on a stool at a Town Hall event prior to the Iowa caucus, but it is unfathomable that with less than 100 days prior to an election that Franken’s staff couldn’t muster enough supporters to attend (or cancel the event).
That said, just July 29th , President Bush departed from his speech to let the audience ask questions … nobody had any. Now the audience was probably “paid” to be there but since the workers get paid by piece, they may have wanted to get back to work, but it is shocking that nobody wanted to ask a question.
Is Franken is sinking fast ? Yep. Franken has offered a number of poor commercials. His first one was great … with his old grade school teacher talking about his Minnesota roots. But then he went on an attack about politicians turned lobbyists and now has some negative attack ads on Coleman’s Washington living arrangement. He has tried to link Bush to Coleman and that has some merit, but since Minnesota is Obama’s to lose, the link doesn’t work. He needs to ask the question, how will Coleman vote on tax issues under an Obama (or McCain) Administration.
At the first debate between the major candidates at FarmFest, Steve Williams of the Independence Party actually had the best responses to the issues. Williams is a farmer yet he spoke of concern for the national debt and health care.
Coleman defended his record without acknowledging that the Farm Bill was not passed on time and the failure belongs to his inability to get his Republican colleagues to agree. Coleman went on to pass along his factually inaccurate comment about France and nuclear power. He cited 80% … which is the highest that I’ve heard anyone state, but what is actually correct is that of the energy that France produces, 80% is from nuclear … the fact is that France has minimal oil reserves and is actually an importer of energy. To illustrate the difference, in baseball, of my five hits, four are home runs, I can legitimately state that 80% home run hitter … yet if I struckout 8 times in addition to my five hits, I am actually closer to a 41% hitter.Considering other energy sources, the real number is closer to 37% as that is what nuclear produces for their needs. (Also, France should be concerned about the Russia-Georgia conflict, since that is where they get their natural gas.)
Franken did fine … sounding knowledgeable but did not hit Coleman where he should have.
Barkley was okay.
Perception and momentum are important in political races. The fact that the SC article that you linked had 63 responses does not bode well for Mr. Franken … and if you google Franken Veterans you see all sorts of references mocking Franken’s drawing power. He needs to turn this bad news around by showing that he will go anywhere and talk to anyone with a concern … he got over 100 in Owatonna and I don’t know how many at Winona and Rochester the previous day.
From my perception, Coleman may crack 50% if he goes positive in his campaign commercials. I don’t know if a TV debate would help either Coleman or Franken, but it could deliver more votes to the IP candidate. Franken really needs to focus on the next six years and will Coleman lead the Republicans to help solve our problems or will he continue to support obstructionists tactics.
